Interspan Europe – Strengthening & Repair Division
Interspan Europe has launched its specialist Strengthening & Repair division, responding directly to the reinvention and repurposing of existing structures, which lies at the heart of the London Plan and the EU’s new Energy Performance of Buildings Directive (EPBD). These mandates require all new buildings to achieve zero-emission status by 2030 (European Commission, 2024) and require Member States to drive renovation of the worst-performing existing structures (European Hydrogen Observatory, 2024).
The expansion includes two senior leadership appointments: Marc Daly as Managing Director Europe and Steven Regan as Non-Executive Director.
Interspan’s specialist capabilities in forensic investigation, in-house design capability, and suite of concrete strengthening solutions are positioned to help developers and contractors meet the new regulatory requirements while reducing costs by re-inventing structures.
Increasing capacity to meet the EU’s ambitious net-zero targets and the reuse regulation
Building on the catalogue of experience already in the group through its Australian Specialist Strengthening business, Slabtec, the new division will focus on extending the life and enhancing the capacity of existing buildings across the United Kingdom and Europe – by working with clients and designers to leverage cutting-edge forensic investigation techniques, and using the latest concrete strengthening techniques including Carbon Fibre Reinforced Polymer (CFRP) strengthening, and Ultra High-Performance Concrete (UHPC).
“We’re seeing developers avoid demolition and rebuild, with embodied carbon typically accounting for 30–40% of a building’s total lifecycle emissions (ScienceDirect). “On recent projects, our strengthening work has allowed clients to change the use of buildings including increased building capacity at significantly lower cost and faster project completion than demolition and rebuild.”
Marc Daly, Managing Director Europe at Interspan
Engineering Excellence Driving Sustainability
Interspan’s work on London’s award-winning Space House project, which won Retrofit Project of the Year at CONSTRUCT Day 2024, enabled the addition of two extra storeys to the Grade II-listed tower while reducing its embodied carbon.
At Sydney’s Quay Quarter Tower, winner of the Best Tall Building Worldwide award, Interspan’s use of several different strengthening techniques enabled a $900 million refurbishment that has set new global standards for sustainable development.
Interspan uniquely integrates in-house post-tensioning expertise, advanced forensic diagnostics, and cutting-edge strengthening technologies to enable a single-source delivery model trusted by global developers for complex retrofit and reuse projects.
With over 350 dedicated specialists across five continents, Interspan accelerates project delivery, reduces embodied carbon, and unlocks structural capacity beyond conventional engineering approaches.
“The European market represents enormous opportunity for sustainable building practices. Our strengthening and repair capabilities don’t just extend building life – they fundamentally change the economics of development by unlocking capacity that owners didn’t know existed. With over 350 specialists worldwide and a track record of delivering over 2 million square metres of post-tensioned floors annually, we’re uniquely positioned to help Europe’s building stock meet 21st-century performance standards.”
James Laws, Executive and Founder of Interspan Global
