Project Description

Elephant Park Plot H7 – Interspan design and construct for the post-tension works

Elephant Park Plot H7, located in the historic neighbourhood of Elephant & Castle in London, UK, is the fifth and final phase of the Elephant Park. Within this development, 424 apartments will be created, offering a diverse range of tenures, including build-to-rent (BTR), affordable, and private sale options.

Designed to redefine urban living, Elephant Park Plot H7 is a collaborative effort by the renowned Main Contractor and Builder, Lendlease, the Frame Contractor, Byrne Bros, and Robert Bird Group as the structural Consulting Engineer.

Interspan were engaged on a design and construct basis for the post-tension works by Bryne Bros.

The post-tension slab scope for Elephant Park Plot H7 spans over 33,000 square meters and comprises a striking twenty-five-story tower and four nine-story mansion blocks.

The design works included coordination of perimeter fixings for the façade elements and consideration of the impact of service penetrations.

The structure also contained transfer levels, which had to satisfy strict deflection criteria.

Advanced engineering software, such as RAM Concept, played a pivotal role in the analysis and design phases of the project. This state-of-the-art software helped optimize the structural integrity of the tower and mansion blocks, ensuring they met stringent criteria for safety and functionality.

The application of post-tensioned slabs in the project allows for thinner slabs to be adopted, reducing the structure’s overall weight versus a reinforced concrete slab.

The reduction in materials through effective post-tensioned slab design reduces embodied carbon versus a reinforced concrete slab.

This new mixed-use development in South London has been shortlisted for the 2023 Concrete Society Awards.

The awards will be announced at our 55th Awards Dinner, held on Wednesday, 15 November 2023, at The Royal Lancaster Hotel, London.
