Project Description

Post-tensioned slab expertise for Westmead Paediatric Services Building

At Interspan, we are proud to contribute to transforming healthcare infrastructure in New South Wales with our post-tension slab expertise for the Children’s Hospital at Westmead Stage 2 Paediatric Services Building (PSB). This landmark $330 million project, with builder Roberts Co, represents the future of paediatric care in Australia.

A New Era for Paediatric Services

The proposed Paediatric Services Building (PSB) is a state-of-the-art high-rise hospital designed to expand and replace existing services at the Children’s Hospital at Westmead. With a focus on delivering comprehensive care, the facility will include:

  • Advanced surgery and critical care services.
  • New front-of-house and retail spaces.
  • Specialist units include the NICU, PICU, oncology inpatient, and day oncology.
  • Family-focused retreat areas and short-stay accommodation.
  • Perioperative services and surgical short-stay units.
  • Logistics and back-of-house facilities.
  • Enhanced public domains and landscaping.

Interspan’s Post-Tensioned Slab Expertise

Roberts Co. engaged Interspan to design and construct over 55,000m² of suspended post-tensioned slab across 14 levels, beginning at the suspended Level 3 slab. This involved 63 pours and supports critical clinical spaces, operating theatres, and paediatric patient wards.

Carbon Savings from saving over 1,000m³ of concrete.

Interspan’s commitment to sustainable construction led to the development of efficient slab designs, saving over 1,000m³ of concrete.

This environmentally conscious approach translates to significant carbon savings equivalent to:

  • 433 one-way flights from London to New York.
  • 216 people’s annual consumption of meat, dairy, and beer.
  • 119 family cars running for a year.

Engineering Excellence

To meet the stringent demands of this project, Interspan leveraged advanced engineering capabilities:

  • Vibration Analysis: Comprehensive studies ensured all slab designs met the precise requirements of the consulting engineers.
  • Surelok Dowel System: Designed, supplied, installed, and grouted all Surelok dowels for slab temporary movement joints (TMJs), enhancing structural performance.
  • RAM Concept Software: Interspan’s in-house Design and Engineering team employed this cutting-edge software for design efficiency, compliance, and practical insights.
