Delivering Post-Tensioning for a Landmark Data Centre

Interspan is proud to be contributing to the delivery of Brooklyn Data Centre BK2, part of CDC’s expanding Melbourne campus.

CDC is widely recognised as a leading developer, owner, and operator of sovereign, highly secure, and connected large-scale data centres across Australia and New Zealand. Their first Melbourne campus has been operational since 2024, adding more than 150 MW of high-density capacity to CDC’s growing pipeline of critical infrastructure. BK2 represents the next phase of this expansion, with completion due in late 2025.

Interspan’s Role in the Project

For this project, Interspan has been engaged by I&D Group, the frame contractor working alongside Icon Co as the main contractor. Sellick Consultants were the designers for the project. Our scope encompasses the supply and installation of post-tensioning works across a total area of 57,831 m².

Work commenced in October 2024, with our PT programme scheduled for completion in May 2025, supporting the wider project’s delivery in late 2025.

Technical Innovations and Challenges

A key technical feature of this project is the use of 15.2mm strand, specified instead of the standard 12.7mm to meet the performance requirements of the data centre’s demanding design.

Additionally, Surelok shear connectors have been installed for the temporary movement joints (TMJs), ensuring stability and long-term structural integrity.

Meeting Tight Timelines with Quality Outcomes

With its large floor plates, heavy tonnage per pour, and fast-tracked construction program, BK2 presents the kind of complex challenges where Interspan’s experience and precision matter most.

REASONS TO USE POST-TENSIONED CONCRETE:

  • Increased clear spans
  • Thinner slabs
  • Lighter structures; reduced floor dead loads
  • Reduced cracking and deflection
  • Reduced storey height
  • Rapid construction
  • Large reduction in conventional reinforcement
  • Higher degree of crack

    Quality Assurance

Quality Assurance holds immense significance for Interspan because it impacts the safety of our operatives and future occupants, the long-term durability of our structures, and our client satisfaction and relationships.

Interspan is accredited under CARES APTO1 for the Production and Supply of Post-tensioning Anchorage Systems and is the only post-tension contractor in Australia accredited under CARES APTO4 for the supply and installation of Post-tensioning systems in concrete structures.

    Sustainability

Post-tensioning is a powerful technique that can enable reductions in materials and carbon emissions through effective design within the construction industry.

By adopting post-tensioning, we can build more sustainable, resilient, and environmentally friendly structures, paving the way for a greener future.
