Post-tensioning for Newcastle Airport – ACE Terminal Expansion
Interspan is proud to have delivered the post-tensioning supply and install works for the Newcastle Airport ACE Terminal Expansion — a $110 million redevelopment designed to unlock international connectivity for the region.
The expansion will enable the processing of long-haul aircraft carrying up to 400 passengers, more than doubling the current domestic operations’ capacity. The Code E runway upgrade is capable of accommodating wide-body aircraft, such as the Boeing 787 and Airbus A330. The expansion aims to facilitate direct international flights to destinations such as Southeast Asia, the Middle East, and the Americas. This project marks a nationally significant milestone, positioning Newcastle Airport as a true global gateway.
The redevelopment will:
Increase the current terminal footprint by 50%
Deliver upgraded arrivals and departure processes
Introduce new retail opportunities
Enhance the passenger experience for both domestic and international travellers
Interspan’s Contribution
Working alongside Construction Control as the main contractor and Sellick Consultants as the consulting engineer, Interspan was engaged to deliver the supply and installation(S&I) post-tensioning works for the Newcastle Airport ACE Terminal Expansion.
Our scope covered 4,403 m² across Level 1 and Lower Roof slabs, with works commencing in December 2023 and scheduled for completion in November 2024.
Our role centred on providing a post-tensioning solution that ensured both structural efficiency and long-term durability. The delivery was managed under tight project timelines and involved night work to minimise impact on the airport’s daily operations. Our team consistently upheld the stringent quality and safety standards.
Project Significance: Driving Sustainable Growth for the Region
The Newcastle Airport ACE Terminal Expansion is more than an infrastructure project — it represents a bold step toward a more sustainable and globally connected future for the Hunter and Northern NSW regions. Targeting a 5-Star Green Star rating, the development combines world-class passenger facilities with strong environmental performance, ensuring the airport grows responsibly and with a focus on longevity.
Beyond the immediate benefits for travellers, the expansion will deliver lasting economic advantages. By enabling long-haul international flights, the airport is set to attract increased inbound tourism, opening the region to new markets and visitors. The expanded terminal will also support the growth of freight-related industries, creating opportunities for import and export businesses to thrive.
Most importantly, this investment secures the airport’s role as a gateway for long-term regional development and connectivity, strengthening the economic resilience and sustainability of the Hunter for decades to come.
