Project Description

Building a Brighter Future for Children’s Health

The $658 million redevelopment of Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and the Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre is set to revolutionize paediatric health, research, and education in Australia. Delivered by the John Holland Group in partnership with Health Infrastructure, Children’s Cancer Institute, and UNSW, this ambitious project creates a state-of-the-art hub within the Randwick Health and Innovation Precinct, promising a brighter future for children and families nationwide.

The new hospital will significantly enhance Paediatric care with:

  • An expanded emergency department to meet growing demand.
  • A medical short-stay unit designed for improved patient flow.
  • A cutting-edge neurosciences centre focused on complex conditions.

The Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre will be Australia’s first dedicated centre of its kind. It will integrate innovative technologies and foster collaboration between researchers and clinicians. This transformative approach will drive groundbreaking advancements in the treatment and outcomes of childhood cancer.

“Our commitment to targeting a carbon zero outcome during the construction phase is just one step toward the project’s vision to deliver a healthier and more sustainable future for our children.”
Joe Barr CEO – John Holland.

49,000m² of suspended post-tensioned slab

Interspan was commissioned to fully design and construct 49,000m² of suspended post-tensioned slab, completed over 74 pours. The scope included one basement level and 10 levels of clinical services, operating theatres, and patient wards.

This work underpins the hospital’s structural reliability, ensuring it meets the highest durability and performance standards.

300m³ Concrete Savings with post-tensioning approach

Through the efficient design of the hospital slabs, Interspan achieved a significant milestone: saving the client 300m³ of concrete. This sustainable approach reduced material usage while maintaining structural integrity, showcasing our commitment to environmentally conscious construction practices.

Vibration Analysis and Optimized Roof Design

In line with the Consultant’s brief, Interspan conducted a full vibration analysis to meet the project’s stringent requirements. Additionally, we provided an alternative concrete slab roof design, which the client adopted in place of the original structural steel option. This solution delivered both performance and cost efficiencies.

Surelok Dowel System

Interspan also designed, supplied, installed, and grouted all Surelok dowels to the slab temporary movement joints (TMJs), ensuring seamless integration and enhancing the structural performance of the slab connections.

Looking Ahead

Scheduled for completion in late 2025, the Sydney Children’s Hospital Stage 1 and Minderoo Children’s Comprehensive Cancer Centre will become a beacon of hope for countless families. At Interspan, we are honoured to play a role in shaping a facility that embodies innovation, compassion, and excellence in paediatric healthcare.
